Autumn (September – November)

Autumn is when most people head towards western Europe in vans. Whilst France, Spain and Portugal have good weather during early Autumn the weather can be changeable. If you want to stay in the sunshine, and you are travelleing south (like most people) you should try and get into Spain by mid September and Portugal by October. If you enter these countries after these times you risk more rain.

Winter (December – February)

The Algarve region of Portugal and the souther Mediteranean have the best weather during winter. Average daily temptratures in the south are 17 degress C in January, the coldest month. This holds true for as far up the Mediteranean coast as Alicante. Nice in the south of France will average 12 degress C during January, too cold for most looking for sunshine.

Surfers looking for the best waves will want to consider staying north of the Algarve, around Ericeria and Peniche. The crowds will thin a little but the waves will be good. You might need a 4/3 wetsuit though, rather than your summer 3/2.

Spring (March – May)

The region starts to warm again in March, with Lisbon averaging 18 degress C and Barcelona averaging 16 degress C on the east. In France the warmest place in March will be Nice at 14 degress C.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is the hotest month for all of these countries. In June most places will be in the 20’s C, right through until August. To escape the crowds try going north.
