Cold and rainy day at Praia do Barranco, The Algarve, Portugal

It is cold in the morning, my thermometer says 9 degrees. I have only had a few days like this on my entire trip. I don’t like the cold, and hadn’t expected the weather to be as cold as this. However, chatting to an English chap who has lived here for 4 years, he said that this was an warmer than average year. Saying that “last year it was much cooler”.

This makes me feel grateful for the good weather this year. If it where worse I am not sure I would stay here.

It has rained a bit this morning also. I have parked near the beach, in a sandy and slightly muddy area. If heavy rains fall I may have to move my van to avoid getting stuck. I don’t think heavy rains will fall though. I sit in the van with 2 t-shirts, 2 jumpers, 2 pairs of socks, and a hat on. I am warm enough. A reasonable wind comes and goes. I think the valley here at Barranco funnels the winds in an offshore direction. This is good for surfing, as the wind is always offshore. The sun comes out now and again, which I am relieved for it, as it gives me power to use my laptop. Otherwise I would be doing a lot of reading today.

I am finding myself bored, and questioning whether I want to be here. As circumstances currently stand, I do not want to be here. It is cold, the sea is cold, and I am not surfing. The sea today is flat. I want to be travelling and meeting more people. However, just 2 days ago I was sunbathing on Luz beach, and really enjoying myself. This is a great opportunity for me. If I sit out the cold weather I can get back to surfing, and enjoying the warm weather again. I have plans to meet friends in Malaga for Easter, a friend in Barcelona for the Formula 1 Grand Prix in May, and hope to go to Ibiza and the north of Spain after. This would be a great end to my trip. So, I am reminding myself to relax, and enjoy this part of the trip as much as possible.

I have many things in my life, and in my van to occupy myself. I do not know other people, without these things, prevent themselves from getting really bored and fed up.

The surf forecast for today suggested good strong waves. But the sea is flat. I am not sure I would go surfing, as it cold outside today. I’m hoping there is enough sunlight to allow me to get a good deal of work done today.
