The Camper Chronicles MKII: Whitstable

The annual Jolly Boys Outing took us to the north coast of Kent. Whitstable was the chosen venue for the sequel to last year’s tear up in Hastings. This outing had two simple objectives: Eat more, drink more. Were the Jollies, Mette, Lewin, Doug and yours truly up for the challenge?

Yes. We were.

We started on home turf. A trip to Tony’s Cafe on Derwent Boulevard was in order to kick off proceedings with a well spent £4.50 for an All Day Breakfast Special and a bucket of tea which was hotter the the centre of the sun. So, the first objective was well on the way to success – all we had to do now was to find somewhere to eat a dolphin and chips and then a crap curry in a crap curry house.

As with any holiday or away day, the outward journey sparkled with excitement and lively chat. We yelled at each other, fighting to be heard over the blaring music.

“I’m a bit of a Spartan,” begins Mette.

“OK?” I bark over the hammering of AC/DC. “What, you mean you like wearing a loin cloth and partaking in Greco-Roman wrestling?”

“It’s all about their care of the skin…” he replies, wistfully watching the scenery rush by.

I take a gulp, worrying that tonight, I will be sharing the bottom bunk with a man who is picturing himself as a Spartan. He continued.

“Essential body oils. They like to keep themselves well oiled and supple in the sun.”
