San Vincente de la Barquera – surfing and sunshine

I wake up and walk onto the beach. It is a beautiful day, and there is some good surf. I think I will try later. I tidy the van and take a drive into town. I buy some bread and milk from the smaller shops, as supermarkets are closed in Spain on a Sunday.

When I return to the beach I chat with an old German man who jokes about the many English [British] vehicles around.

When I return to the beach I chat with an old German man who jokes about the many English [British] vehicles around. He says this may be his last time to come to the region. He has been coming here for 30 years, but they have closed a couple of beaches and some of the places he used to stay. He says things are becoming more expensive now. This is the effect of the Euro. He says he wants to continue down to Portugal. I say I am going that way myself, tomorrow hopefully.

I eat fruit in the dunes whilst watching some surfers. I decide to give it a try, hoping that my dressing will hold up. I wear a rash vest with a high collar to prevent the wetsuit rubbing against the dressing. I have a good surf, with some good sets coming through. I am still not used to my shorter board, but find paddling ok considering I haven’t been surfing for a while now. After I shower I realise that water has got under the dressing. I pull the dressing off. The skin looks fine, with a small hole where the incision was made. I assume the air will do it good. I’ve no need to return to the doctors now. I will complete my medication today, and enjoy a beer tomorrow!

This is good in a way. Tomorrow morning I can set off. However, the sun has been great today, after the rain of the last few days, and the surf was great. The surf and weather forecasts are good for tomorrow. If it is nice I may stay another day.
