Relaxing and sightseeing in Beja, Alentejo

I get up quite early. The weather is looking good, so I wash my bedding, which is long overdue. I spend the morning doing odd jobs, learning Spanish and doing some work.

After lunch I head into town on my bike. I see the castle, and enjoy riding around the streets, and through the park. It’s a pleasant town, although there are few sites.

After lunch I head into town on my bike. I see the castle, and enjoy riding around the streets, and through the park. It’s a pleasant town, although there are few sites. I have really enjoyed staying here on the campsite. It’s a nice spot, and very cheap. I always get a good feeling when staying at such a cheap campsite. There is no feeling of having to move on, that I often get with more expensive campsites.

On my way back from my ride I stop and chat to a Dutch fellow. We have a long chat, drinks and smokes. He is an interesting chap, originally from Amsterdam, but now spending his winters in Portugal.

For the rest of the afternoon I study and work. I have dug out my Portuguese phrase book, which I had stored away. I learn some phrases, and am surprised to see so many are the same as Spanish. Steve has inspired me to study Spanish everyday, and I am learning quite a bit. I have decided to learn a little Portuguese whilst I am hear for the next few weeks. I feel silly for not having studied more during the long winter months. I think a lot of that was frustration. I don’t think I will do another winter out here, but ‘never say never’.

I am having a great time at the moment.
