Here is a tale about our first ever day out in our first van, Rosie. Again all events are true, and the names have not been changed to protect the guilty.

I bounded out of the driver’s seat and into the sun kissed street with all the vim and vigour of a man who had spent a fair portion of his bank account on something worth shouting about. I stood back, arms held outstretched in mock embrace, admiring the new van.

A snip at £4000, my 1986 VW T25 shone, ice white and resplendent, its high top reaching spaciously skyward. My older brother, a man who knows considerably more about all things vehicular approached, wearing his customary scowl.

“Who gave you permission to own cooler wheels than me, little brother?” he said with a firm handshake.

He made his way around the vehicle, heaping praise upon its 80s coolness, but continuing to berate me for having the audacity to actually buy it…
