The Camper Chronicles: The Death of Rosie MKI

Any camper van owner will site his or her van as their absolute pride and joy. The sight of their van, sitting, ready and waiting as a vehicle for escape and recreation is a glorious one which embodies the very heart of freedom. However, when mechanical torment issues forth from the very depths of Satan’s bowels, that picture can become blurred and distant.

Especially when you have all the mechanical aptitude of a gibbon.

Rosie, our 1986 T25 was our first van. She provided the perfect induction into van ownership. She was in good nick, bodily and mechanically, and she was weird enough for people to stop and star as she rumbled along. This is what the previous owner told me as I parted with £4000 for her.

The problems came quickly and regularly. The first of them occurred on the first drive home, which you can read here. Following that, after just a few weeks, I was informed that the squeaking at the front end represented a braking system which was so ineffective that I’d have been better off stopping the vehicle like Fred Flintstone. At the same time, there was a serious leak of diesel, rendering the already questionable consumption frighteningly expensive.
