Some of our camping venues have particular stories and previous visits attached to them and so some of the Camper Chronicles may not even feature a camping escapade, telling of breakdowns and hilarious farting gags or sleeping bag mishaps. Rather, they may give the background to subsequent camper visits. One such destination is Nottingham in England’s glorious midlands.
I had history with Nottingham long before I rolled into Sherwood Forest Holiday Park in my old T25, Rosie. As the reputed home of my favourite character of English folklore, Robin Hood, I had wanted to visit since I was little. The city had grown its very own sense of mystery and mysticism and I knew that I would one day visit to go in search of Robin and his Merry Men. As many know, I have a penchant for the 1980s TV series Robin of Sherwood which is largely responsible for fuelling my love of the tales as well as the wider interest in that period of history. Robin may or may not have existed, but in him we find the idea of justice and fairness which has become an integral part of our nation’s culture. He is a heroic figure; the original working class hero. As a man, I am prone to bouts of daydreaming, and yes, on occasion, I have pictured myself as the elusive outlaw character running gaily through the greenwood nicking from the greedy to give to the needy. Even in my daydreams, however, I don’t look good in tights.
