From my early 20s I have always owned a campervan . The 1st was a type2 microbus, the 2nd was a VW LT28 which I converted from a van, the 3rd was a VWLT35 which I completely refurbished from a Youngs conversion and lastly, I have recently completed a nice conversion on a Transit LWB van. I have been a carpenter/joiner in the past and had a kitchenfitting business, so I have the multiskills required for such a project Being out of work for a period I concentrated my efforts to completing this to a high standard within a very tight budget.I kept the costs of the equipment down to a minimum by buying an old caravan and stripping out all the useful bits. The results have been very satisfying an I was able to complete the whole project within 3 months and within my intended budget. Now I am retired , I can be available to help out any prospective self build enthusiast or any one who wants help with an ongoing project.
I chose the Transit for its value for money and for its robustness and general reliability. My initial choices were Mercedes or VWLT but the prices asked for these were very high for low milers in good cosmetic condition. I’m very pleased with the Transit. nice to drive, economical, not too noisy, very comfortable. Mine has the 125ps 2.4 lt duratorque engine which pulls up any hill with ease and cruises all day at 70 + on the motorway. My search for the right van at the right price was very thorough and you have to be prepared to look at many before you buy. There is little point in investing £4000+ in equipment to put into a van that’s either going to give you grief or that looks like a wreck. I’ve gained a lot of experience in used van selection, suitable for a motorhome conversion .
