I got this second-hand “suitcase” generator from a mate of my brother’s (the nice man who’s rubbing the van down, actually). Cost £40 and will run for about 4 hours on a tankful of unleaded. I ‘umm’ed and ‘ahh’ed about it for a few weeks before I went for it. I thought it might be a bit of an extravagance. When we tried it out though, we found that it would run my 110v 9″ circular saw (just) when connected through a transformer. As that’s the most powerful bit of portable kit I have I think it’s probably worth taking with me. It’ll also charge a 12v battery in an emergency, apparently, but reviews say that it’s a bit pants at it and takes ages.
I’m planning on taking some of my carpentry and building tools about with me, stashed in the space under the bed. I don’t know if I’ll be lucky enough to find any work (repairs and such on campsites?)whilst on my travels during the winter but you never know. Rather take them and not need them than need them and not have them in this instance. I’ll put the genny next to the portaloo in the shower tray whilst rolling. Sussed.
