My thoughts so far, travelling for nearly 1 month

I realise today that I have been travelling for nearly 1 month. It doesn’t feel like it. Today, and the last few days, have been strange, as suddenly I’m just killing time, and surf has no importance as I cannot go in the water, because of my neck. Its not so hard killing time, but I’d rather being doing something, than killing time not doing something, if you know what I mean.

Without my laptop to give me things to do I think I would be very bored.

Sometimes it does not feel like I have been travelling for nearly a month. But when I think about all of things I have done since arriving in France it seems like I must have been travelling longer!

I have loved living in the van. The vulnerability of a break-in or theft has led me to stay in a campsite nearly every night. I also realise I like being able to sit in the evening with the door open and relax. This is not really possible by the side of the road. The free rest areas I have stayed in also were relaxed, and I felt happy there. But campsites offer the best places to stop. With the facilities it is a much better place to spend the night.

I realised that I could be saving more money, by camping wild more often. But I have also realised that I have not spent as much money as I had expected. Things have been generally cheaper than I though, which is great. But I am always keen to keep costs to a minimum, as it allows one to travel for longer, which is what I always want. I’m affording myself treats at the moment though, to make recuperating easier.

I can’t wait to get back into the water and looking for waves. I haven’t surfed anywhere near as much as I would like to have. It was here on this coast where I expected to get the most waves, and it seems like the right place. Actually Asturias, the next region I will enter in Spain, has even better beaches, so this is maybe where I will find better waves. The weather is great, and the sea is probably the warmest I will find it. I have seen many guys surfing in just board shorts.

I’m hoping to camp wild more. It would be good to meet up with some other people doing similar things. It’s a shame I haven’t been able to stay in more youth hostels, but abandoning the van is not a good idea.

It’s lovely seeing so much of beautiful France and Spain. I am very much looking forward to Portugal. This is certainly better than working!
