Don’t think you can go far
Don’t think you can go far wrong with a T5, as with all modern diesels, especially German ones you do hear horrific prices for things like fuel pumps etc being needed on relatively new vehicles, luckily these do seem to be the exception rather then the rule.
There is a huge kudos with VW, especially converted ones, do they deserve it?, who knows, but the T5’s are very sweet vans to drive. Personally I’d avoid the lowest bhp models, but the 102hp are fine.
Seems to be a fair selection of T5 conversions for under £20000.
I had my mind pretty much set on a T5 4motion panel van to convert myself but a Sprinter on ebay changed that.

    Sounds like a fantastic trip.
Sounds like a fantastic trip. When your in the south of France, do take a bit of time to wonder into the Maritime Alps. Sometimes these southern range of the Alps get overlooked, but there just as amazing as the rest of the Alps.
And if you feel like a bit of an adventures drive theres Fort Central and the Ligurian border road, an old Italian military road. Obviously depending on the size of your camper.
