Galicia

Free camping in Galicia

Northern Galicia: The coastal road that hugs the stretch of coastline from Ribadeo to Foz has many car parks and bus parks. I have stayed in a bus park there in Autumn with two other motorhomes. There are several fields marked as free parking, which also seem OK to stay in overnight. There are no signs suggesting that leisure vehicles are prohibited. Whilst parked there a Guarda Civil patrol car passed and did not approach us. There are beach showers and some toilets dotted around.

Surfing in Galicia

Due to its position Galicia can pick up massive swell from Atlantic storms. Few people venture to the west, and beaches there are less crowded than any others. The road network is also less developed there though. The local surfers here are generally friendly, except at Pantin and Doninos perhaps. You should be able to find lots of breaks to yourself though.

Northern Galicia: The stretch of coast line from Ribadeo to Foz has many great beaches. Outside of summer you will have the whole area to yourself. There are plenty of car parks around. There are also lots of campsites and free camping opportunities (see above). This northern area of Galicia picks up good swell and can produce great waves. Check right along the coast though. It will only take 15 minutes to drive along this stretch and the waves can vary greatly between beaches. With the right conditions you will be spoilt with numerous empty breaks.

Driving south or west to Santiago de Compostela (or north from Santiago)

When driving south or west to Santiago de Compostela you can either take the A-6 and then the toll A-9. I took the non-toll option of the A-6 and then the N-634, which is the signposted non-toll option. This stretch of the N-634 was of reasonable quality and the traffic moved quickly. There are some rough sections, but they pass quickly. It takes in some great countryside. I’d recommend it for anyone thinking of taking the non-toll option.

Santiago de Compostela

Parking in Santiago de Compostela

There are several car parks when approaching the city, within easy walk. It is a reasonable but manageable walk from the As Cancelas campsite (see below).

A nice site with good facilities, although a little neglected out of season. Follow the signs from the A Coruna road at Avda. del Camino Frances. It is a 30 minute walk to the city, with a route on the excellent map provided at reception. Open all year. Moderately priced.

Luarca

Luarca is a pretty seaside port, who’s fishing boats serve the towns restaurants well. The roads around this area can be very steep.

A nice popular campsite with good facilities. It is situated on a cliff edge with fantastic views. Follow the signs from the N-634. Open all year. Moderately priced.

    Loving the site, very informative

Can you recommend any campsites between Foz and Ferrol, that are open after 15th Sept? (finding that all campsites shut on the 15th!!)
