Spanish Formula One Grand Prix, Catalunya

The Spanish Foruma One Grand Prix is one of the best in Europe, and indeed the world. The circuit is a favourite with the drivers, and since the success of several times world champion Fernando Alonso the event has become very popular with the local fans. Barcelona is an excellent city to visit, and is within easy reach of the circuit.

The circuit is in the town of Montmelo, about 30kms from the city centre. It is about 2kms (1.5 miles) from the circuit to the train station in Montemlo. Montmelo is a pleasant town with a good selection of cafes and several small supermarkets. There is a camping ground at the circuit, which makes an excellent base for the weekend.

You are not permitted to take any alcohol into the event, and drinks and food inside are very expensive.

Camping in the circuit grounds

During big racing events a camping ground is provided on the northern edge of the circuit grounds. The toilets are of reasonable quality, better than one would find at a music festival. The showers are also good, but you have to choose a very quiet time to ensure any hot water. The site is quite large, but does fill up by Friday night, so booking ahead is vital. Tickets are often available up to Thursday and cost €40 per group or vehicle. The site is fairly level but rock hard. The campers enjoy themselves and are a noisy lot, with fireworks regularly being set off. It is a 10 minute walk from the campsite to the circuit. It is 1.5 kms (1 mile) from the camping ground to the entrance of the circuit. If you are bringing a vehicle and camping for the weekend bring plenty of supplies to prevent having to drive back into town, as traffic gets very busy, and it’s quite a long walk. Having a bicycle helps though, but there are a few hills on the route to town.

Transport around the circuit

There is a regular and cheap train service to and from the city. Road access is good to the circuit.

Tickets

A general entry ticket is about €120 euros for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For a seat in a stand prices start at around €170 for the three days. A seat in a good stand costs around €240. Tickets are normally available from the circuit a few days before the race, but it is a good idea to book ahead. Tickets are also available from various places in Barcelona city, look out for signs.
