Hi I live in Australian and am trying to get information about owning a Camper Van in Italy (or France) and use it several months each year for touring and then Storing it when not in use. I plan to own it for about 5 years. Where do I start? What do I need to do? Would it be more economical to base it in another country? (Ownership Costs) Here in Australi, Some states do not require annual mechanical inspections> Are there any EU countries that do that? Any advise will be appreciated… Charles

  1. How To Buy A Campervan As A Non Resident
    Hi there,

I am an Australian who recently bought a camper van in the UK, registered & ensured it and am now travelling for 5 months. We found it really difficult to find current information on how to do this, so I wrote a post about it on my blog. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Hi Charles
    I think you can

    Hi Charles

I think you can buy and own a vehicle in any EU country as a non-resident.
As far as I am aware all EU countries require an annual vehicle inspection. Some countries have stricter tests than others.
Used vehicle prices in the UK are generally much cheaper than other countries, due to a massive used vehicle market. But obviously Uk vehicle as RHD, and the continental vehicles are LHD. I have driven a lot on the continent with a UK vehicle and didn’t find it a problem.

Language will be a problem when buying a used vehicle, especially with insurance.
Buying and insuring from the UK is obviously easier with the language, but also because the there are companies who specialise in insuring non-residents in the UK, due to the large numbers of people buying vehicles in the UK.

In terms of storage, you best bet would be to find a land owner, campsite or farmer and negotiate a deal with them for storing your vehicle. Obviously it makes sense to find one near a transport hub.
