just seen a 2004 model for £3,000 with 50k miles on the clock.
Has anyone got any experience of converting a minibus, such as this, into a camper van? is it a good vehicle? maintenance and parts easy?
Obviosuly, would need to strip out the seating to start with. any advice on design would be good.
Also, could somebody outline the basic process of doing a conversion? What are the main aspects to consider? It ould be great to have a comprehensive plan before I start.
    Any help would be great!

  1. Check the buyers guide

Check the buyers guide before you purchase.  Only buy it if you feel really happy with it.

Parts for a cam belt will cost about £100, labour about another £150.

Try the following website for common faults.  I think you have to register but it’ll be worth it.  I’ll be adding more info to this website when time allows.

    Hi PC

These are good vans, used by the military and post office.  They are basic in terms of technology, and require regular maintenance, but are reliable and last well.  You have yours for a good price.

The timing belt (cam belt) is likely to need changing at 60k miles, so keep that in mind.

Mini-buses are great for conversions because they have so much room and have windows already fitted.  Black out or cover with wood the windows you don’t want.

Try this page for layout examples.  You need to find the one that suits you best.

For you conversion you need to:

    1.  Plan it, including costs

    2. Line the van, vans and floor, insulating it if you want, although your mini-bus might not need it.

    3.  Add electrics and wiring, before you start burying everything.

    4.  Add furniture; kitchen, beds etc.

    5.  Plumb in the kitchen

    6.  Finish it off

    7.  Enjoy camping 🙂

Good luck with your conversion.  Please let us know here who it goes.

      Hi darren
Thanks for the reply. Very helpful.
I’ve never bought a van before so don’t really know what to look out for or ask a seller.
How much does a cam belt cost typically?
Also do you know if these vans are known for any particular problems?
      Ta.
