Hi we yesterday Bought ourselves a Vito van to covert into a DayVan/Campervan, but are not quite sure the bast way to go about it with the Insurance side of it, Do you have to inform DVLA and then insure as a camper? and what are the requirements for it to be a camper and does it have to be inspected or have a new mot.
Any advice or tips would be greatfully appreciated.
Many Thanks SarahJuly 30, 2012 at 8:43 am #122290DarrenKeymasterHi Sarah
1. You don’t need
Hi Sarah1. You don’t need to inform the DVLA that you are converting it. You can, if you wish, tell them once the conversion is finished. If it meets their requirements they will re-classify it as a campervan. They’re guidelines are on this page: https://www.campervanlife.com/building/legal
2. Insurance. There are several companies that will insure your van as a van now, and give you 90 days to convert it to a campervan. After which they will insure it as a campervan. If your conversion will take longer than 90 days I would suggest insuring the van as a van, then changing the insurance to a new policy as a self built campervan once it’s finished.
I have used http://www.campton.co.uk. They are a helpful broker with knowledge of lot of different policies.
3. Once the van is converted you do not need to get it inspected or a new MOT. If you try and get the vehicle re-classified as a campervan with the DVLA they might ask to inspect it, but it’s rare.
I hope this helps.
