    Hi there,

I’ve just spoken to a long-term campervan owner who very kindly gave me lots of helpful advice. He has just the sort of camper we are after: T5 2002 full conversion with pop-up roof. However, he said he spent £32k on it. And that was in 2002. We were hoping to find something much, much cheaper. We’re not fussed what it looks like, just that it’s good to drive, maintains well, not too much of a guzzler, has the pop up and the conversion. Any suggestions much appreciated.

  1. Hi Dan
    VW’s are the most

    Hi Dan

VW’s are the most desirable small campers, and keep their value very well. They are 35K+ to buy new.
There are other vehicles to consider.
But we need to consider your requirements.
How people will travel in the van?
How many people will sleep in it?
How many adults and how many children?
    What is your rough budget?
    How mechanically minded are you?
Do you intend to do long or short trips, Uk or abroad?

    Here are a few alternatives

    1. Thanks Darren – much appreciated
      Really helpful, thanks Darren.

There will be two adults, two small children and a large dog. My wife and I will share the driving, though the passenger will need to be able to turn around to feed/play with the kids. We were thinking of using the pop-top roof for the two kids, particularly when no time to de-camp, but will probably invest in an awning and large tent for longer stays so we can be comfortable in the rain. We were hoping to spend about £5k, but could go up if necessary. I’m not mechanical at all and while I’d love to learn, I just don’t think I’ll find the time. We’re aiming to do lots of short-ish weekend and holiday trips in the UK, but would perhaps like to take it abroad too.

Any further information you have greatly appreciated!

      1. Dan – we are same position as
Dan – we are same position as you but higher budget. Having looked around (we are first-timers) we have been most impressed with long wheel base VW T5 variants. We have child + large dog and the LWB gives you bigger floor space for dog sleeping, plus access to fridge/cooker etc without having to put away bed. Sorry but new one of these will defintely set you back 35K+, or look at 2nd hand LWB T5 van and get converted. Good luck !
