I am looking to purchase my first camper van and need all the advice I can get. I have 3 kids so need a van which can carry 5 people, although don’t need a 5 birth as we will be using in combination with a tent, so will mainly be using the van for cooking in and for odd days out, etc. I’ve been looking on ebay and am struggling to find vans which can seat 5 unless i go for a large motorhome, which I do not want. Any advice and suggestions would be welcome.

  1. Morto, We have this same
Morto, We have this same issue too. 3 kids and not wanting a massive motor home. How have you got on? can you advise? We are happy with 4 berth but need 5 seat belts.

    1. have a look at the japanese
have a look at the japanese import vans such as toyota hiace super customs there are loads on ebay and the like or check out many of the specialist dealers such as http://www.poplarmotors.co.uk/archive.php …many of the jap vans come with 6 or more belted seats…

  2. I used a company in
I used a company in Birmingham called Restall Brothers for two extra seats as we have kids too.

Good seats and totally tested to UK standards.

  3. Kia or Hyundai
If you’re in Ireland or England or anywhere in Europe the 2 best half five seater half van would be the Hyundai i800 or H-1 Double Cab or you can get a Kia Sedona five seater. 2 problems the best one to get is the Hyundai but you need to get that brand new and the Kia, you can get second hand but it’s an ugly thing, it has a lorry engine and the steering locks so you can only do an 11 point turn on a narrow street.
Perhaps if you’re in Australia or America thats almost impossible because, they never heard of a van just a truck.

cheers for info Darren, very useful indeed.

  5. All panel vans come with the
All panel vans come with the option of 3 seats in the cab, and most are built this way.
However, almost all professional conversions have 2 single seats in the cab. With home conversions many people leave the dual passenger seat in the front, giving 3 seats in the cab. I suspect your best bet is to find a good quality home conversion with 3 seats in the can and another dual seat in the back. This isn’t the most common configuration so be prepared for some extensive looking around.
Adding a dual seat to the living area isn’t generally an easy task, as the layout is already defined when the conversion is done. The space where you need to fit the seat is probably already used with rear seating.
You could always find a conversion, either professional or home, with two single seats in the front, and replace the single passenger seat with a dual. You can find dual seats on eBay or at your local vehicle breaks quite easily. Vans have fittings for single and dual seats already fitted, so fitting the dual should be straight forward.

  6. thanks Darren, is there a
thanks Darren, is there a particular type of van which has 3 front seats? Alternatively does anyone know how easy it is to fit extra seat belts?

  7. 5 seaters can be a struggle
5 seaters can be a struggle to find. I suggest that you keep looking. Some DIY conversions, which can be of very high quality, have 3 seats in the cab and also a double seat in the back.
Whatever you do ensure you buy a vehicle with 5 seat belts as this is vital.
