Hi,
I’m Vince. I and my girlfriend Catherine are the proud and lucky owners of a 4 doors Renault trafic SL27 Dci 100 from 2005 in pretty good condition. The plan is to turn it into a camper van as soon as possible and hit the road! First ever conversion so will need a lot of advise, especially on the electrics. The plan is to keep it pretty basic, insulate floor sides sealing with sheep wool, laminated floor, futon sofa/bed and mattress, 2 hobs gaz stove, electric/gaz cool box and that’s about it. All of this removable so it can be used as a basic van when needed. We’re planning on using 8mm ply wood on the sides and 6mm on the sealing. I would like to fit a leisure battery that charges from the engine when on the road for 4 to 6 spotlights, and two plugs for the cool box and charging phone/computer. I was told that a leisure battery kit was unecessary and that a simple relay could be used. What battery/relay/cables should I get and where? Any advise on the electrical instalation and where I could get spolights/plugs/switch would also be very welcome…
Looking forward to hearing from you all
CheersVincent

Your plywood sizes sound fine. Some people even go with 6mm on the walls. It depends on what you intend to mout on the walls. If you are using the van for work 8mm or 9mm on the walls is probably better. You don’t need a leisure battery kit. A relay will do.
I’d recommend a 100 amp relay, like this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-100-AMP-HEAVY-DUTY-MAKE-AND-BREAK-RELAY-4-pin-Ideal-split-charging-/330709100641?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cffcc6861#ht_1721wt_1109But there are 30 amp relays that are smart relays, which are easier to fit, like this one

Yes, it’s a plumber van, really happy with it. We’ve been too busy lately to do anything on it but should be able to start next week. Insulation first, still looking for it, comparing… then ply wood and electrics. Thanks Darren. Would a battery like this one do the job? Is 100 Amp enough for 4 spot lights, a cool box, and a plug for phone/computer? I will get the 100 amp relay, loving the 12voltshop by the way…May 23, 2012 at 8:47 am #125088AnonymousGuestYes, it’s a plumber van,

100 amp battery is probably fine for 2 days or so. It depends on how much power the cool box and computer use. The lights and phone charger will use very little power.
I would go with the 100 amp and see how you go. It should be fine.May 23, 2012 at 8:51 am #125096DarrenKeymaster100 amp battery is probably
