Hi
We have just bought our first van and have managed to get 4 weeks leave in july-august. We would ideally like to spend the time meandering around France, stopping at campsites for a while before moving on along the coast. The catch is that, with 3 children, we reckon we should stick to formal campsites.
So my question is simply is it possible and/or sensible to do this without booking the sites? Will we be able to find decent campsites either by just turning up or calling a day in advance?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but any advice would be appreciated. We have looked at booking campsites for the whole trip in advance but trying to decide in advance how long we want to stay and how far we want to drive seems to defeat the purpose a bit.
Cheers

At this is a tricky one. This is the busiest time of year for campsites.
On my experience, If you don’t mind where you stat you do not need to book in advance.
However, if you want to stay at particular sites then you need to book these in advance. Otherwise you’ll have to stat at the sites with space.
Maybe pre-book the sites you really want to stay at, and chance the others.June 8, 2013 at 6:09 am #117715DarrenKeymasterAt this is a tricky one.

HiThanks Darren, that sounds like good advice. It may be best if we book at each end of the trip and wing it in the middle.

We found that there were lots of campsites along the coast so if you arrived on time you would have no trouble getting a pitch. If you have your heart set on a particular site then book it of course. There are also the municipal sites in towns. Not large but a place to stop. You can’t tell looking from the web what’s actually there. We booked one site mid-France for after the ferry and sure enough there was a pool and a bar but the toilets were just a hole in the floor. Of course in France they don’t consider privacy like we do. You will find mixed sex toilets and basic amenities in a lot of places but there are also some lovely sites where you can get a pitch with it’s own facilities.
