The solution to the colour matching problem was another stroke of good fortune. After much head scratching and beard stroking, I decided to paint the panels of the doors. I started with a rub down and a coat of grey primer. When it dried it was an almost perfect match with the colour of the upholstery. Result! I then applied two coats of clear lacquer and job done.
