What if there was one activity that could benefit every student in every school across the country? An activity that could improve grades and scores on standardized testing? An activity that would allow students to form lasting friendships? Activities that will help students become more disciplined and confident? Fortunately, there are such activities. Unfortunately, many schools will not be part of their curriculum because of funding and scheduling issues. This activity is something everyone knows about, but not everyone has a chance to participate. This activity is music. Although music education has been proven to benefit students, many people argue that it is still not required in schools. They claim that with the growing importance of standardized testing, there is not enough time to include music classes. However, it has been shown that the time students spend in music classes does not interfere with their academic success. A study conducted by Hodges and O'Connell found that "being excused from non-music classes to participate in instrumental lessons does not adversely affect academic performance." in a study conducted in 2000 of 162 sixth graders (source: https://studyessay.org/report-writing-service/), Ron Butzlaf concluded that students with two or three years of experience in instrumental music had significantly better scores on the Standford test (verbal and reading skills test) than their non-music counterparts (Qdd in Judson). This experiment shows that music can affect improvement in many different academic subjects. Overall, it can be shown that music education is a worthy investment for improving comprehension and achievement in academic subjects.
