HiThis sounds like a great adventure and challenge.
Fitting the carpet will make the back feel much warmer and cosier.
I have a decent curtain separating the cab and living area in my Sprinter, and it makes a big difference in winter and summer.
Be careful using a gas stove without the windows open, as you will get carbon monoxide poisoning. It is worth getting a detecter from a supermarket.
For sinks, taps, etc there are loads of cheap ones on eBay if you take your time. Or visit a caravan breakers.
For a heater, nothing beats a blown air heater. Eberspacher make great diesel powered ones, and Propex make great gas powered ones. They are expensive – £400+ but keep you really warm, are totally safe, and can be fitted inside cupboards so dont take any living room.
Definitely have a space where you can stand when moving between living and sleeping setup.December 7, 2012 at 8:57 am #120852Darren

Hi Darren.Cheers for the encouragement and good advice. I think we met above Festinog, when you were on your way to marshall a race and I was off on a run. That was a great run. How was the race?
Any cooking I do has so far been with both doors and windows open to some degree. I have actually just purchased a detector today however. I’ve started wiring this evening. I’ve ended up having to drill 2 small holes in to the engine bay for the wires coming from the relay. It’s quite a tight fit, but I’m gonna seal round them.
How difficult is it to install a diesel heater? Do you normally split the fuel cable already coming from the tank? Thanks again,
John 🙂

KeymasterHi John

Hi JohnDifferent Darren I’m afraid. Did they have a similar van to me?
Diesel heater is fairly easy to install. I think it’s recommended to install a separate fuel pipe into the tank. Many tanks have a easy way to do this, but making a hole in the zone where the existing pipe enters the tank. This is worth researching though.December 10, 2012 at 8:04 am #120864Darren

Participantsorry for the delay
Hi Darren.Yes, the other Darren I met had a converted sprinter. He was also very friendly and helpful, checking I was aware of this site; tall and thinking about buying a smaller van similar to mine, so I’m sure you can understand the confusion. I went all out and bought a new Espacher D2 heater, now I need to get it fitted. I’ve booked it in to Stockport Campervan services for next week, with a quote of £300! Any ideas of places that may either be able to install it sooner or cheaper would be appreciated, as I should be in Scotland now.
