Can anyone think of a reason why you couldn’t make an awning from a large tent extension such as this one:

    http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/outwell-montana-6-extension-p104615

pitched up by the van with a tarp to cover the gap. I have a Vauxhall Midi high top that is similar but smaller/lower than a VW T25. The door is only about 180cm off the floor and the tent extension is 210cm.

Why can’t I find any evidence of anyone doing this? I know a proper awning would do a better job, but it would do, right?

    or wrong…?

    No reason why it wouldn’t
No reason why it wouldn’t work.
As you say, proper van awnings have a flap to connect the vehicle to the awning. A bit of tarp will do. Just ensure it is attached to the van in some way.

    Easy enough to stitch some
Easy enough to stitch some velcro onto the extension with the other face glued onto the van.
