is there something you can get to put in the water tank to give it a good clean were too worried to drink water out of it without boiling it or is this advisable anyway

Milton, used for babies bottles, etc, is a good cleaning solution. There are specialist tank cleaning products, but I think they are very similar to Milton, and Milton is generally cheaper.
