This is my first post here, hopefully someone can give me some help.

I am planning to do a van conversion but I want to check out the way the insurance is likely to work for it. If I can work it out properly I will be making the van dual purpose, where it will be used as a panel van most of the time (for my business) and sometimes as a campervan,

I hope to be able to design it so that the units built into the van are removable, and put into storage, when I am using it as a panel van and then they are easily put back into place when I want to use it as a campervan.

The problem is that I don’t know if I will be able to get insurance for it, and if I do would it be as a panel van or as a campervan. It seems pointless to start if the insurance is going to be an issue.

    Thanks
    Jim

    Hi Jim
    Hi Jim

Only the insurance companies can tell you this. I recommend using a broker, the following offer great DIY camper insurance.

I’ve had my van insured via Campton for years. Mine is insured as a campervan, even though not registered as a camper with DVLA.

    Thanks for the reply Darren,
    Thanks for the reply Darren,

My concern is that if it is insured as a campervan and there is an accident while I am using it as a normal van, where would that leave me. In terms of annual mileage, I’d expect to be using in the region of 10% to 20% as a campervan and the remainder as a normal van.

I guess the best thing is to call the insurance companies and ask. Thanks for those contacts.

I totally agree that this is
I totally agree that this is something only the insurance companies will be able to agree with you so get on the phone.

In case your not having any luck with those guys I highly recommend http://www.brentacre.co.uk/

They specialize in camper conversions and are super helpful. Nobody else would insure me due to my age but these guys insured me at a low price! Also they are happy for you to keep modifying your vehicle as much as you want with no effect on premium.
