Participanthi all..im in the process of building a race transporter and have a question regarding seating – would i be legal using a bench seat facing rearwards without the use of seat belts..?? ive seen many a pro job with a ‘dinette’ area behind the drivers bulkhead without seat belts however i dont know if id be road legal if i was to carry more than the 3 persons permitted in the front..im aware i dont have to reregister the vehicle as a motorhome/caravan in order to comply as i think i can keep the vehicle registered as a @stealth’ van…any legal ideas other than fitting belts to all seats..?? thanks in advance..

HiHave a look at this page:
https://www.campervanlife.com/forum/campervan-conversions/seat-belts-regulations-and-guidelines-for-camper-vans-and-motorhomesThe short answer is, if you have changed the use of the vehicle you don’t need seat belts for the extra seats you have added.
However, your insurance company is unlikely to be happy to insure you whilst carrying passengers who are not wearing seat belts, and also if the police stop you they might find your passengers unsafe to travel.June 21, 2012 at 7:24 am #123171Darren
