We've got a '97 Vito petrol 130bhp, 30mpg (more on the motorway) they're a smashing little van, plenty of poke ours has a reimo roof, bed, space heater, sink, cooker, dual charging. Never let us down in 5 years - all over europe. It's got enough room for 4 adults at a squeeze. I think they got a bad rep because the early diesels were poor and suffered at the hands of builders et al.

has anyone drove to europe in a mercedes vito and used it as a camper van??

I have a Vito 108D converted by Autosleeper to a camper Van. It is a vastly underrated but excellent tool for the job. It will be used for surfing trips and camping in France and Spain once I can afford the diesel! (:
