During our last two South African holidays we used VW based Autovilla motorhomes which we found very usefull as it meant we could stop off where we pleased and always have the important items to hand.

We decided to get a motorhome/camper here in the UK for domestic and European travel. Checking out the market and watching many of these vehicles on Ebay led us to the conclusion that we needed to do our own thing if we were to achieve the type of vehicle we wanted within our budget.

Some of the most important factors would be a base vehicle large enough to accomodate the entire family (2 adults, 1.5 kids & 2 dogs), and it should be able to reliably cruise at a decent speed over large distances.

In the end we went for a self-build based on a Mercedes Sprinter Ambulance. Having won the auction on Ebay during the week, I went to collect it Saturday 02 May '09, and also collected a caravan to be used as a donor for the essential bits of kit.
