Stealth camping
Hi guys and gals!
Just looking for views on stealth camping in carparks/sides of roads in spain/portugal.
I have a van which from the outside looks like any builders van. When sleeping inside is it wise to put a notice in the front to let others know i am asleep in the back?
Thinking about parking tickets/clamps. If someone knows you are in the back they are more likely to wake you then clamp you? Or is advertising the fact you are in the back just looking for trouble?
Please let me know your opinions/experience!
Many thanks
Si
Parking and sleeping in a vehicle is much easier in Spain and Portugal than in the UK.
Don't put notices in the front. Don't draw any attention to yourself. Motorways and busy areas can have some trouble when wild camping. Try and avoid them. Truck stops can be OK.
Better places to camp are in beach car parks, and there are some official Aires provided by the councils.
Thanks for the replies! All usefull info as i am planning my 1st trip!
Was hoping to go spain/portugal for 3 months april-june but it looks like work will delay this until june. Not sure if i should leave it till septemper/october time because of the summer heat plus areas being busier during summer?!
I would recommend avoiding June, July and August. It does get busy and hot. Also the police are not keen on people wild camping then. Except for the Galicia region, north west. They receive few visitors, and welcome vaners in summer also.
Cheers Darren.
Looks like i won't be going until september now but hopefully will get a week or 2 free before summer to do a trip around cornwall!
Are you at home or away at the moment? Haven't seen much from you recently! I read your blog which was really helpful but i see you stopped it in november!
Anyway i'm sure i will have some more questions to post soon! Cheers
Hi Si
Well, I've just moved to Brighton! So home now. Will be here for a while. I need to concentrate on my business and this website for a while, and need a good base to do it.
Glad you like the blog. I still have some old posts to post.
Have lots planned for the website.
Stay tuned!

Many roads in Spain certainly have lay byes you can park overnight in unhindered. Just park up with the truckers...Same goes for most European countries.
