i have just bought a vito, but where do i start with a conversion. i want to do it myself, and i have a budget of £800. is it possible? i am quite handy making cabinets and bed etc, but where do i get 2 windows for the doors?
what sort of insulation? and where from?
i need all the advice i can get please as i have not done this before.
Yes, you set the budget, and it's possible to be a nice conversion for £800.
Are you looking for windows for the side doors or back doors? For the back doors go to a scrap yard.
A cheap way of adding a window to the sliding door is to get an old sunroof from a car and mounting it in the sliding door.
For insulation you can use polystyrene or a cheaper version of kingspan. Car carpet is fine. The thin stuff is the easiest to work around corners.
The cheapest car is from a carpet shop, get the very cheapest stuff, but make sure it's not too thick.
i pick up the van friday ready to convert. i have this idea of getting an old caravan, and stripping out the interior and using/modifying it for the van.
i had this idea while i was trying to work out the electrics, i didn't know where to start, so i thought use the loom from a caravan, ok replace the wires, but surely, in theory it would work?
2002 Merc Traveiner Vito use it everyday for work and surf. Spent 3 happy weeks away this summer in the uk. Self conversion is an option I'd recommend, but get help when you get to the bits you're not sure on. Other than that it's a far! more affordable way to do it than the massively over priced VW T5 and the antiquated T4, although if we all had loadsa money we'd all have a T5. The vito is a great counter culture van for the man with a budget. Get one
Hi, I am planning on doing a self build campervan on a vito next year. I will be restricted by a budget around £2300 for van and conversion! Can anyone help with advice and if this is possible? Has anyone used youngs conversions in Milton Keynes? as i live close to them
Hi. Yes it is possible to do the conversion for that budget. But you will need to be careful with your spending.

We've got a '97 Vito petrol 130bhp, 30mpg (more on the motorway) they're a smashing little van, plenty of poke ours has a reimo roof, bed, space heater, sink, cooker, dual charging. Never let us down in 5 years - all over europe. It's got enough room for 4 adults at a squeeze. I think they got a bad rep because the early diesels were poor and suffered at the hands of builders et al.
has anyone drove to europe in a mercedes vito and used it as a camper van??
I have a Vito 108D converted by Autosleeper to a camper Van. It is a vastly underrated but excellent tool for the job. It will be used for surfing trips and camping in France and Spain once I can afford the diesel! (:
hi, have you any ideas i could use that you hav done, the van is a 109CDI i think! (my boyfriends!!) we may be putting a portable shower on it but thats about in maybe a rock n roll bed too?!?!? diesel is a rip off!!
yer , i have a vito 1, year 1997 and have converted it into a camper, i have driven to south of france twice and to spain, i am off to portugal in september for a month too in the van.
