Kiwi couple looking for camper advise
Hi guys, im looking for some camper info, this looked like a good place to start. The wife and i intend doing UK and Europe from May to September 2012 and were looking at hiring a small Van style camper from a company like "space shuttle" or "wicked". Unfortunately the bulk of our trip is during "Olympic period" and even though we intend being in Europe during the time of the London Olympics we still have to pay a hefty increase in daily rental of the van during this time. We are now considering buying our own van then leaving it with friends to sell when we return home. We have a Toyota Hi-ace here in NZ which we use for freedom (wild) camping in the summer, so the concept is not new to us. We can easily convert a panel van to a camper but are worried about the legal side and insurance side of using a Panel van as a camper in the uk and Europe. Any advise from people who have done this (especially Aussies or Kiwis) would be most grateful.
thanks, steve
Hi Steve
This is a difficult one.
Insurance is difficult in this regard. I don't think there are any companies who will insure a panel van as a campervan.
You can either take the risk of just driving the van as a panel van. Your contents wont be insured, just the van.
http://www.duinsure.com/ insure vans for Kiwis. Try speaking to them and see what the options are.
thats cool, we will be traveling light so wont have too many belongings. im not worried about contents, just theft of the vehicle or if we hit someone or something.

Camper Van Life is brought to you by Darren Lambert, a big fan of camper vans.
A good few years ago, there used to be a few companies in London who would sell you a camper with a guaranteed buy back after you have finished with it, don't know if these type of businesses still operate.
Also up at Earls court, On a Sunday Many folk would gather as there used to be a buy and sell of campers between Brits and Aussies...Don't suppose it exists now, as they were the "hippy" days. However, you may find a buy-buy back scheme
