I have just got a 2005 MWB merc Sprinter 311 CDi to convert to a camper.
I built a camper years ago using a Bedford Ambulance, kitted it all out and fitted a Rover V8 with an auto box...but now I need something a bit more efficient on fuel.
I have been thinking of getting a complete caravan old or damaged and stripping it for the fittings etc. Will first fit windows and a couple of roof vents then insulate it so at least I can start using it in easter as I need to tow a race car. Any advice on lining and the best insulation will be appreciated.
regards
Phil

Hi Phil Nice to hear from

Hi Phil

Nice to hear from you.
I have a CDi 311. Great van.
Caravan is a great way to go to get all of the bits at once.

The best insulation is celotex or Kingspan type stuff. You can buy discounted packs on ebay. Also seconds are available if you google it.
For lining I used 6mm plywood. Gives a little bend for following contours. Line everything at once, before you start making furniture. It's much easier and stronger. Put in any wires or pipes first though. Trunking is a good idea.

Avoid rockwall insulation,

Avoid rockwall insulation, It is not safe to use in a living area, and nasty to work with.
B&Q (and others I expect) sell a rockwall alternative, made from recycled plastic bottles. It's blue, very easy to get into gaps, and safe to breath near and touch.

Many thanks guys, but got a

Many thanks guys, but got a big problem at the moment took the van for a longer run and its throwing out its coolant...also got a few worning lights on the dash. Took it to a local Merc specialist and yes says it has at least 9 faults on the computer and the presurising of the watter could be head or head gascte problems,,,rung the guy a bought it off and he is not prepared to take it back...so once Christmas is over I will be seeking legal advice,,,just my luck. Still hope to run Sprinter as I licked the way it drives etc,

Wow, sorry to heat that.

Wow, sorry to heat that. Head gaskets are a nuisance. the 9 faults are probably not all faults. In my experience the computer gives three faults on the computer for every real fault.

Where is the water coming from. The Merc specialist should be able to diagnose the head gasket quickly.
