Porridge
Porridge is a great way to start a cold winter morning. Oats are available at any large supermarket.
Ingredients
- Porridge oats (may just be labeled as oats) - about 3/4 cup per person
- Milk
- Optional: Banana, jam, chocolate spread
Cooking
Add the porridge oats to a pan. Add milk to the required consistency. Bring to a near boil, and then simmer for about 5 minutes.
Try adding pieces of banana when cooking to give a great alternative flavour. Smaller chunks dissolve, larger chunks do not. Also stir in a spoonful of jam or chocolate spread once in the serving bowl. Kids love jams, chocolate spread and banana added to the porridge.
Oat cereals
It is easy to make your own interesting and tasty oat cereals, just by adding fruit and nuts.
Ingredients
- Oats (same as porridge oats) or museli
- Milk
- Fruit or nuts - try rasins, banana, apple
Instructions
Add about 3/4 cup of oats to a desert bowl. Add milk and stir until the oats absorb the milk. Add fruit or nuts to taste. Raisins and diced or sliced bananas are particularly good.
Basic museli is also normally cheap to buy. By adding your own fruit and nuts you can make more cheap and interesting breakfasts.
