campervan rallies
Trying to get a few people together so we can start campervan rallies, I think it would be a great time for us to be able to discuss our builds, help with ideas and for us to form a network so we can keep this great hobby going, what do you think guys and dolls? john
I love this idea, and I believe something like it might already exist. You tend to find non-mainstream campervans at festivals and the like, and some VW shows have a "poverty corner" where they let non VW types park. THAT'S where I want to be, in amongst the underdogs, and yet close enough to the VW bunch to pinch a few ideas...
Sounds good to me John!
VW Whitenoise rally in Norfolk allows non VWs in. It'll be in August next year and if you buy tickets now, it's £20 for the weekend
thanks for that mr gruber
It seems little interest think its sell the van and book in a travel lodge lol ( not )
NOOOOOO!
John, I'm sure they're isn't going to be too much interest unless you drive VW as they are classics and have a massive following.(I have a transit). The average campervanner, I'm presuming doesn't want to start getting involved with rallies, but get as far away from them into the wilds of the forests and lakes as possible, where a caravanner would find difficult. I can understand caravanners holding one at a caravan club site with entertainment in the club house like "The Bert and Miriam combo" so they can gather round in a circle and discuss funeral plans & coffins. (Maybe hold a "whose got the shiniest grill pan competition").
You might have gathered now, I aint a fan of em.
Are we then saying that campervanners are loners? If thats the case what are we doing on here sharing our experiences? Perhaps we like swimming the opposite way to the crowd and dont like to idea to much of seeing others like ourselves out and about. Now that is food for thought lol.
No John. I don't think that is entirely the case. However, I am very aware about Caravan rallies and the People who tend to attend them. (Many couples bored with their own company who seek social intercourse with others). This is from a Personal view only, and I am sure that there are many socialite campervanners who would subscribe to this kind of activity.
We used to caravan, but feel a Campervan can take us to more innaccessible places. We're not loners, indeed completely the opposite and would gladly socialise should other campers be near us, but I'm personally not a fan of organised pow wows.
I think john is talking a bit smaller in scale rather than big rallies. My own thought on it is it would only be of interest if it was a specific meet for something specific like the engine work or body work. I'd like to meet people that wanted to form a network of people that came and helped each other out on there vans, I'd get a lot more done with 2 or 3 people helping me wouldn't you.
my mother use to say if we all put our heads together we might make a plank lol i just think it would be nice to get together to get ideas and yes help out etc
I am up for it why not, I am sure we all have a few skills to give, I know a great cheap camp site near Bath, I am sure they would be happy with us visitors. I am sure if others here read to they could offer options, I have only a van and I am keen to learn of self builders. So you can bore the arse of me because I am in ( I am ready to learn) I am prepared to travel too.
Kind Regards
John the Wanderer 007
I recently bought an ldv 200 '96, and would love to go to a campervan rally. I've never been to one but dont want to go to a rally dominated by VW buses.
Will be pleased to know I am the only VW so far :) do not worry I am not a VW dub freak I drive a Renault Kangoo mainly. Right the Yellow man in :) from wales so its looking like the West then so far big Wagonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Suz is up for the West. Where are you then Mandy BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
Hi, any news on starting a rally? I'm all for it, would love to meet up with like minded people and would welcome any advice on keeping my old bus happy!
Every one happy with those dates. Shall we start planning now I could have a suggested programme of events by next Wednesday if everyone happy well come aboad Mandas Yellow Perril. Can you speak Welsh by the way maybe we could have a Welsh Language for an hour. I lived both in the North and South of Wales Crickhowel in the 90s and early 2000s Lanfair PWGL
Look at the hello all page a meet trying to be arranged from that page
If you enjoy meeting others and speaking about van builds you might check out the SelBuildCampervanClub site, they meet up alot and have the date and location on there web site of there next meet. Just a thought Sir.10/11/12/13 May 2012

This is there next meet.
I cant make that one, but I will be there for the next one, count me in rather then moan about things. Some of us want a meet, Big Wagon Suz would be interested I think too. Only positives can come out of it because you learn. Programmed events or not :). I love socialising and meeting like minded people. I will bring the boards too if you want. I have to buy some first though.
Hi, I hope I can join in the meet in June but it depends where it is. I bought the bus in January and haven't driven him more than about 40 miles (round trip)! not sure how far the chuggy old engine will go! Yes I can speak welsh although not quite as well as I used to unfortunately.
Programme of Events? Sorry, that picture just made me crack up! I imagine you walking round with a clip board and saying "at 08.32 am We will shall be doing synchronized tyre pressure checking, followed by a snakes & ladders marathon".
Nah, just chuck some steaks on a barbie, load up with bottles and watch the natural conversation flow and offer a prize to the last one standing! Thats my kind of Pow wow, and programmes of events are one of the major reasons, I'd never go near a caravan club event.I've seen so many on sites where they all gather round in a circle whilst some old Melvyn chimes on for hours about how to glue a spirit level to your towing device for level loading.....i'm getting my coat and I'm off.
Are they hunting you down...trying to re-wire you in order to bring you back into the fold?
Im new to this forum as you know and tend to go it alone but Im more than happy to hook up with folks i find along the way and impromptu is always best and leaves the happiest memories for sure. But. I would/will be keen to throw my efforts into meeting up, wild camping or basic stuff... the important thing is to be with folks who have the same take on this great life on the road.
So i agree...an old half oil drum for a BBQ in the middle and let the beer, wine and talk flow til it runs dry. Then we can sit and watch the sun come up.
Im there already
Suz
Good job it's not this weekend, You'd not see the sun come up! Life on the road? Not for living! I'm just a leisure camper and through neccesity when I go trading at auto shows.
I again wish you all the very best with your meet and we all do EXPECT a full report to this forum on your return.

Camper Van Life is brought to you by Darren Lambert, a big fan of camper vans.
To be honest, I can see your idea, but I have a fear that it would turn into a "Caravan club rally" type thing where everybody gathers in a circle and bores the shit out of each other about their latest gadget whilst judging each other and their vehicles whilst sitting in their B&Q plastic chairs.
HOWEVER, although WE personally want to get out in the wilds away from the mainstream caravanners..campers etc, it doesn't mean that it wouldn't work with like minded socialite folk like yourself. Obviously if we arrived somewhere for some outdoor pursuits and there were others there wild camping, we would certainly chat.(Had a fantastic drinks/chat evening in the middle of the alps with a dutch couple few years ago) but organised camps would not be for us. Good luck.
