Hi Darren,

We are (permanently) moving to France in Sept and want to buy a camper van before we go, partly to help with moving many of our belongings. Is it better to buy in France, so we don't have to go through all of the importation issues later, especially with possible expense if the van we buy doesn't conform to French standards? Or is buying here, in terms of choice/literally 'being here' to be able to look at/inspect lots of vehicles, the way to go.
We're going round in circles deciding the way forward!!
Cheers.

Darren's picture

I would definitely buy in France.

1. This will avoid having to import and re-register a UK vehicle in France
2. You will have a left-hand drive vehicle, rather than right-hand drive
3. You will have a vehicle you can sell much more easily in France.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Any tips on buying in France?
I'm aware of site like http://www.leboncoin.fr but just curious
of any experiences...buying first van bytheway...!!

Selling my treasured Convoy which I've owned since 2006, being the second owner of the vehicle. I have self converted the van into a 2/3 berth campervan which includes:
Fully insulated, carpeted roof, vinyl floor, Solid wood worktop, plenty of storage, sofa seat which pulls out into large double bed, leather passenger swivel seat, 12v fridge, Seperate 100a leisure battery connected via relay to main battery (so charges when engine running but will not drain van battery when electricall appliances in use), lights and power sockets connected to leisure battery, pull out Gas stove with 2 hobs & grill, 2 7kg gas bottles with regulators: 1 UK compatable & 1 Euro Compatable. Rear double doors give access to full height 'Garage' area with air circulating vent fitted in roof, this easily houses 3 bikes, surfboards, plenty of spares, camping chairs, tools, etc. The rear doors are fitted with a Kryptonite lock. Plus other camping accessories.

I race mountainbikes around Europe and use the van for me & my girlfriend to live out of over the summer months. As of this reliability is paramount to us and the van has been kept in outstanding mechanical condition and will easily do another 100,000miles. All receipts kept to prove what work done. There will be a full 12 months MOT at point of sale.
The van is a SWB standard height van with single rear wheels at the rear (G.L.W of 3.1T) therefore goes through the standard car MOT & is relatively fuel efficient. The engine & gearbox are Ford Transit as fitted from manufacture meaning good reliability & parts are easily sourced.

This is going to be a bargain to the lucky buyer as you will struggle to find a van more than a few years old in this condition. Unfortunately we will be emigrating which forces the sale of our beloved mobile home.

If you require any further information, photos or questions please do not hesitate to contact me on 07874875968.

Hi there,
My girlfriend and I are looking to buy a van for the summer to travel around Europe in and like the look of your van. We were wondering what you were looking to sell it for? Also where are you based for pick up?

Hi all, I am new to this site, and have found it very usefull. I will shortly be selling my Winnebago Chieftain RV which is in Andalucia Spain. We travelled from Scotland and toured throughout Spain before deciding to buy a property in Andalucia. The RV is a big 'un , 26ft and has all conveniences associated with the Winnebago brand of RV. She is 30 years old and has only 65k miles on the clock. We have re-fitted the interior to a high standard spending quite a few quid in the process. Will be putting her on Spanish plates. Watch this space for more info or drop me a note .

Hi, I live in Spain and want to swap a rover 200 1999 with low mileage spanish plates but right had drive for a small camper van. This car is in great nick, although has a dent to the left wing. Van must be Spanish registered.

Hi we are a Kiwi couple looking to travel through UK Europe May next year. We are interested in purchasing a small camper and quite like the look of the Renault Trafic. However,we don't know the history of the vehicles (reliability etc) as we don't have them in Nz. Have seen plenty on e-bay but also wondering if there are any 2nd hand vechicle markets or auctions?

Any advice would be appreciated

Many thanks

Anonymous's picture

Just an update. We did buy an 1987 Renault Trafic. Wow , we traveled to the isle of Mann for the Tt racing through the Uk, Scotland onto France Spain Italy Germany for 5 months. Over 38,000 klms later, our Little Renault never skipped a beat, only advice would be......get a diesel, as the petrol costs were huge, and power steering, and fridge you can access without having to wake your partner to fold up the bed haha...

great site thanks

Darren's picture

Good advice. Thanks.
Sounds like you had a great trip.

Hello,
My husband and I are an Aussie couple from Sydney and have just spent the last 6 months travelling around Europe in our fab motorhome. We are heading back home and are selling the van - perhaps you might be interested. Have a look at the van up on Ebay

Or we could arrange something privately if you prefer. We are also looking at May to sell the van, which will need to take place in the Czech Republic, where my husband has family.
Get in touch if you have any questions! Happy travels - you will have an absolute ball, best thing we have ever done!

Well after 3 years of shall we or shall we not,we now both have the job insecurity to make us decided to sell up and get a nice big american RV and try a bit of touring, working our passage in europe in the winter and possibily the UK in the summer ( we have not planned routes yet, its still early days)but I am worried that I am looking at this idea with rose coloured glasses, so what are the downsides ( there must be some)
