Anywhere you can stay overnight in York??

Hi, we are pretty new to this as we have just picked our van up from the convertors! (very happy! :)))))))
We have had 1 trip away and stayed on a campsite in Robin Hoods Bay, which was fantastic! Im not sure how I feel about the whole free camping but I need to get used to it as we plan to travel Europe next year.
Has anybody stayed overnight in York? I would like to be as close to the center as possible but I need to feel safe...is this possible?! hehe!
Any advice/tips would help.

Join the truckers on Trading
Join the truckers on Trading estates, where they park up for the night. When couriering,I always went to an industrial estate and parked up for the night.FREE!!!!!!!!!(they're nice and quiet too.
