Hello, I am nearly finished my Mercedes sprinter conversion but am stumped when it comes to the following. I have read a mountain of stuff but lots of people say lots of different things. So if the experts here can help me I will be forever indebted.
1. Can anyone tell me the best 12 volt fridge to buy, (not gas powered). What type and where is the best place to get 12 volt deep cycle batteries. 3. Is a diesel night heater easy to fit or should I get a battery powered night heater or will the heater just kill the battery. Thanks.

night heater

the only real problem for the night heater is depending on your luck is if your fuel tanksender unit has a extra port on it for a aux heater this you wont know until you have dropped your fuel tank down if it has not you will have to drill the tank and fit a separate pickup or buy areplacement sender from mercs as for the battery going flat you should be ok as the heater cuts out if the voltage drops to low hope that helps

heater

Hi,

I fitted the D2 Eberspacher diesel heater, never done it before and found it pretty straightforward, my fuel supply at the moment comes from a fuel can, but I do have the fuel pickup pipe ready, just haven't got round to fitting it yet. When fitting you just need to make sure you prime the fuel line before firing it up for the first time.

Highly recommend the heater, keeps us well toasted in a T4 size van.

More info here and installation instructions...

Hope this helps

Difficult to say which is the

Difficult to say which is the best 12volt fridge to buy as i don't know all the ones on the market. However i have an isotherm fridge in my sprinter and its great. Just 12volts and it draws just over an amp when running, slightly more on start up. Ebay might your best bet.
Deep cycle batteries. The best are the 2volt ones they use for milk floats and the like but they are generally too big to fit in campers so the next best thing are the 6volt golf cart style batteries. Make up sets of 12volts using 2 in series. These types of batteries can be fully discharged upto about 2000 times, way more than your average 12volt starter battery. Trojan and varta are good makes. A battery power heater will put a big drain on your batteries, get a diesel one, a log burner or a generator.

1. If you don't want gas you

1. If you don't want gas you probably want a compressor fridge. They use very little power. The most popular makes are Waeco, Shoreline and Engel. Compressor fridges are popular on yahcts, because you can't use gas when sailing. Prices start from £300. Very few used ones around, as they last very well.

2. As the other guys have said, banks of 6v or 2v batteries are best. However if you want to go for 12v leisure batteries, try and get them locally. They are not a great item to ship. There are lots of makes. If you want to buy online try http://www.tayna.co.uk/.

3. Battery isn't an option. Gas is easy to install and OK for short periods of use, but the gas gives off nasty fumes. Diesel night heaters are the best for long term use.

deep cycle batteries

I have a marine deep cycle battey. I bought it from walmart. It is under warrenty and I have had to take it back in the past for an exchange. The great part about that is that there is a new warrenty attached to that one. It is hard to loose with that one. Check ehow.com for info on selecting deep cycle batteries. Good luck.

Diesel Heaters

Hi Bugzvan, Your link to the Eberspacher site for manuals and tecnical stuff was excellent. Do you know if a similar site exists for Webasto kit please? I have a 93 Hiace campervan with a malfunctioning Webasto HL18D machine and I haven't found their site very helful. Regards, Simon (simon@qmaxsystems2.plus.com)
